Below are some of the stories of some of the very special and much loved 'Lluestians'. GWILYM 11hh Chestnut gelding born 1991 Who can resist Gwilym, snatched from the jaws of death and nursed back to health against all odds. He was taken to a sale, as a foal, with mis-shapen legs, unable to stand. He had no mane or forelock, due to severe malnutrition. He had rainscald, worms, a respiratory infection, and was passing blood. Believe it or not Ginny still had to pay for him! How to nurse a very sick foal, during the cold winter months? Obvious! Just take him into the farmhouse by the radiator for three months, and feed him every two hours. His coat, mane and tail still bear witness to his dreadful start, but he is friendly, inquisitive and enjoys life at the farm.
Gwilym in Ginny's house, beginning his recovery, and as he is today. HOLLY Holly was emaciated, with poor teeth and rainscald. She was struggling to feed her foal, but was too weak to stand and needed a winch to get her up. After three weeks and a great deal of care she was stong enough, and went on to spend ten happy years at the Trust. She died in her late thirties.
Ginny with Holly and her foal Nest. Holly fit and well. DINAH Dinah was our first donkey. She came to us with her friend Champ. Both were reported in a sorry state with little to eat other than vegetable peelings given by local children. Dinah was a little charmer, loved by many, and was with us for many years before dying from colic in 2005.
Dinah looking sad on arrival and later looking like a little donkey enjoying life. APACHE Apache was severely emaciated and had eaten Ragwort because he had no other food. Ragwort destroys the liver, although the damage and symtems may not show straight away. He was over twenty when he came to us, and was only with us for two years, but look how good they were for him.
Apache before we gave him a new home, and later looking much better. SPARTACUS Spartacus (Sparky) came to us in 2008. He hadn't been ill treated or even neglected. His owner was in the middle of a crisis nursing his sick wife who was suffering from brain cancer. Sparky had been with the gentleman for 18 years. He had tried very hard to find a private home for his beloved friend, to no avail. The other option was to sell him to a dealer - but to what fate? Anyone who has been in this situation will surely understand. We gave comfort to the gentleman and his wife in their hour of need, and Sparky is safe.
