Bert and Ernie – Rescued Young Ponies Starting Their Journey at Lluest
Earlier this year, we were contacted by the mother of a young man with additional needs who had found himself taken advantage of and overwhelmed after a group of young pony colts were dumped on their property without warning or agreement.
The family did their absolute best to care for the ponies, seeking veterinary advice and providing food, all while trying to manage a situation they were unprepared for. Despite their efforts, two of the ponies were in such poor condition that they had to be put to sleep on veterinary advice.
Two others, later named Bert and Ernie, were strong enough to have a future. Thanks to the family’s care and the professional support they sought, the ponies were monitored until they had built enough strength and fitness to travel to us here at Lluest.
A Long Road Ahead
When they arrived at Lluest, Ernie was completely unhandled and extremely nervous. We can only assume they had lived in a semi-feral state since birth, with no experience of human contact other than being herded onto a lorry.
Bert, who was much smaller and had required extra care before travelling, arrived showing a little more confidence than his companion. Ernie, however, was terrified of any contact and remains very wary. Our experienced team is taking things slowly, helping him build trust at his own pace, starting with simple steps like gently putting on and removing a head collar.
Why Our Work Matters
Sadly, situations like this are all too common. Ponies are often left with people who, through no fault of their own, are not equipped to meet their needs. This leads to suffering for both the animals and those trying desperately to help.
This is why Lluest exists: to step in when no one else can, offering safety, expert care, and hope for a better future.
But we can’t do it alone.
